Before allowing a roofing contractor to work on your home, did you remember to ask them for proof of insurance?

What many homeowners don’t know is that they should be asking for proof of a secondary insurance as well as the general insurances contractors hold. To protect yourself, every contractor should hold a Workman’s Compensation policy before starting any work on your home. You may be thinking, “what does workman’s compensation have to do with me as a homeowner? I’m not employed by their company.”

Even though this is true, if a contractor doesn’t hold workman’s compensation insurance, and their employee is hurt on your property, you will be liable and could be sued to cover the costs.

To make sure this doesn’t happen to you, ask your contractor for proof of insurance as well as proof of workman’s compensation insurance before allowing them to work on your property. Many companies may claim to be fully insured, but what they really mean is that they hold general liability insurance. If you do not question them and force them to elaborate on what kind of insurances they hold, you could be walking into a dangerous financial situation for yourself.
