10489961_629159167181039_2139170828603015376_nAccording to All American Roofs, fireworks can set a damaged roof on fire even if the roof isn’t made of wood. Why is this? Certain types of fireworks continue to burn even after they have already hit the ground. Even if your roofing material isn’t made out of wood, it is still able to catch on fire. Please make sure that you are setting the fireworks off far away from your home and surrounding homes because even if the firework itself doesn’t land on your roof, the sparks can. So, what can you do to prevent this? The National Council of Fireworks Safety recommends that you follow these safety tips whenever you are working with fireworks:

  • Obey all local laws regarding the use of fireworks.
  • Know your fireworks; read the cautionary labels and performance descriptions before igniting.
  • A responsible adult SHOULD supervise all firework activities.  Never give fireworks to children.
  • Alcohol and fireworks do not mix.  Save your alcohol for after the show.
  • Wear safety glasses when shooting fireworks.
  • Light one firework at a time and then quickly move away.
  • Use fireworks OUTDOORS in a clear area; away from buildings and vehicles.
  • Never relight a “dud” firework.  Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.
  • Always have a bucket of water and charged water hose nearby.
  • Never carry fireworks in your POCKET or shoot them into METAL or GLASS containers.
  • Do not experiment with homemade fireworks.
  • Dispose of spent fireworks by wetting them down and place in a metal trash can away from any building or combustible materials until the next day.
  • FAA regulations PROHIBIT the possession and transportation of fireworks in your checked baggage or carry-on luggage.
  • Report illegal explosives, like M-80s and quarter sticks, to the fire or police department.

Following these tips should help to keep your Independence Day weekend fun and fire free. Great advice is to know your neighbors enough to determine how worried you should be in regards to their activities on the Fourth. With familiarity, you should be able to determine what their plans are, while creating a relationship that promotes respect for each other’s property. If you can’t be there to keep an eye on your home, a good neighbor should be able to help you out. If an emergency does happen, you should immediately call 911. For emergency roofing repairs, you should call Nauman Roofing. Have a safe and joyful Independence Day!
